2022 Ford Maverick: The Best Pickup You Can Buy

It’s no secret the pickup segment has made some significant strides in the past decade. In fact, the all-new 2022 Ford Maverick is the perfect example of just how much the segment has changed. This midsize pickup rides on a unibody – read SUV – platform and comes standard with a hybrid powertrain. With a starting price below $20,000 and real truck capabilities, the 2022 Ford Maverick is the truck to beat at the moment.
Performance
The 2022 Ford Maverick rides on the same platform as the revamped Ford Bronco Sport and Escape models. Given that the pickup is tuned for optimal comfort and mimics much of the driving behavior of its crossover brethren, the Maverick is a bonafide smooth operator. As for its standard hybrid powertrain, the Maverick features a 2.5-liter Atkinson-Cycle 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. There’s no exclusive EV mode as the Maverick regulates itself in city driving situations while cruising at lower speeds exclusively under electric power. Accelerating will make the engine kick in, but both the powerplant and electric motor work in tandem and achieve 40 mpg in the city. Buyers can also opt for Ford’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine if they need more power or access to all-wheel drive.
Interior
On the inside, the Ford Maverick isn’t only functional, it’s eye-catching as well. Cloth Upholstery is standard and accentuated with two-tone rugged material and contrast stitching. Leather upholstery is also available, with a dark gray with caramel inserts two-tone color theme. Ford opted for a stone-like finish on the dash, mimicking a durable countertop. Passengers can find plenty of head- and legroom in both the front and rear rows.
Exterior
On the outside, the 2022 Ford Maverick fits right into the brand’s truck lineup. On the front grille buyers can find a scaled-down F-series front end, complete with LED headlights. Although this truck rides a little lower than the usual, it still offers buyers up to 8.6-inches of ground clearance. Wheels vary in size, ranging from 17-18 inches, either in steel, aluminum, bright aluminum, and black painted aluminum. The tailgate of the Maverick also fits right in with the brand’s truck lineup and has “Maverick” embossed in the lower tailgate area.
Technology
The 2022 Ford Maverick comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Capability. Ford also made its FordPass Connect system available complete with an embedded modem and Wi-Fi that supports up to 10 devices. Ford’s Co-Pilot360 is an available advanced safety package that includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Evasive Steering Assist, Rear Parking Sensors, and Lane Centering.
