Ford Encourages Enthusiasts to 3D Print Their Very Own Ford Maverick Accessories

When Ford first unveiled its all-new Maverick hybrid pickup truck, it also teased the idea of enthusiasts 3D-printing their very own accessories. Now, it’s official and Ford is living up to its promise. According to Newsweek and 3D Printing Industry, the automaker recently released CAD files to help enthusiasts print their very own 3D add-ons that are compatible with the Ford Integrated Tether System (FITS) slots that are found in under-seat storage bins and behind the center console. Enthusiasts can 3D print their very own cup holder, sized to their specifications, or even a phone mount that’s compatible with their latest device.
Some will criticize Ford for being late to the game as some diehard fans have already designed plenty of FITS accessories ever since the Maverick pickup launched. However, the release of the official CAD files makes it much, much easier for consumers to create suitable accessories. It should come as no surprise when user-made designs and accessories for the Ford Maverick surge.
With that said, Ford is still happy to sell plenty of pre-made FITS accessories, but 3D-printing is a new frontier and the automaker is signaling a big shift in its attitude towards consumers. Design manager Scott Anderson told Newsweek that this latest Ford move acknowledges the fact that do-it-yourself accessory production is on the rise, and that customizations in vehicles go much farther than just performance tuning or external cosmetics. Whatever monetary loss the brand incurs with this latest move will likely be supplemented by customer loyalty – it’s a real possibility for Ford to foster an environment of consumers who would buy the Blue Oval’s vehicles again.
Ford Maverick: Even More Perks
Compact for its size, the all-new Maverick is not only lightweight, but is also one of the few pickups to offer front-wheel drive paired with an electric motor and a traditional combustion engine as well. Given its hybrid powertrain, the Maverick and its towing and hauling abilities benefit from front-wheel drive, however unorthodox some may find the automaker’s choice.
Ford also offers a non-hybrid Maverick that’s powered by a turbocharged 250-horsepower engine complete with 277 lb-ft of torque – safe to say the Maverick falls well within the tiny-but-mighty category. Arguably, one of the best things about the Maverick is the perfect combination of SUV-like abilities with the pragmatism of a small truck. The Maverick also has another thing going for it – it’s starting price is an impressive $19,995 (plus destination fee), opening the doors for first-time truck buyers and other consumers seeking compact capability.
