Ford’s 2023 Bronco Desert Racer Honors Baja Legends
Ford revealed an extreme off-road variant of the Bronco called the “Desert Racer,” showcased at the 2021 SEMA Show. Inspired by the legendary Baja 1000 racers of the 1960s and 1970s, the Bronco Desert Racer is designed for ultimate off-road performance and speed, tackling desert dunes and challenging terrain with unparalleled agility.
Race-Inspired Design
A 5.0L Coyote V8 engine powers this beast, delivering over 400 horsepower through a 10-speed automatic transmission, optimized for high-speed bursts and extreme conditions. To combat the intense heat generated during high-speed desert racing, the Desert Racer features aggressive cooling components, including a large front grille, side intakes, and a roof scoop that channels air to a rear-mounted radiator with powerful fans.
The Desert Racer shares its body frame with the standard Bronco but boasts wide fiberglass fender flares and an open-air rear design for carrying a spare tire. To conquer demanding terrain, it boasts a long-travel suspension system featuring Multimatic DSSV dampers, billet-aluminum lower control arms, and 37-inch BFGoodrich tires. An integrated safety cage protects the driver during high-speed maneuvers and potential rollovers.
For Off-Road Use Only
The Bronco Desert Racer is strictly intended for off-road use. It lacks a windshield and doors, requiring the driver to climb through the window to enter. The vehicle’s powerful exhaust system produces a thunderous roar, making it unsuitable for on-road driving due to noise regulations.
Limited Production and Pricing
Ford plans to produce only 50 units of the Bronco Desert Racer, with a price tag expected to exceed $200,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee). This limited production and high price point position the Desert Racer as a highly exclusive vehicle, targeted towards high-net-worth individuals and serious off-road enthusiasts.
