A new generation of the Ford Mustang is slated to debut in 2024, giving the aging model a much-needed facelift. Until then, pony car enthusiasts can enjoy special edition packages, such as the recently trademarked “Mustang Dark Horse,” which hints at a black accent package for the 2023 model year. The latest news broke on Twitter, where enthusiasts discovered Ford solicited submissions for a yet-to-be-named package via an online form.

The submission form subsequently closed, but as of now Ford has not announced a winner. Statistics estimate that there were over 25,000 submissions. However, although there was no official announcement, Ford did file a trademark for “Mustang Dark Horse” on June 22 (2022). Could this be the winning name? Certainly looks like it given how many of the original replies suggested a variation of “Dark Horse.” Such a name would be appropriate given that it is destined to be the pony car’s blackout variant.

Additional suggestions in the replies included a few other standards such as “Black Stallion,” “Ghost,” and “Midnight,” but neither of these have had trademarks filed by Ford. Much is unknown when it comes to the package’s details, but it should at least include black badging and black wheels at a minimum. Whatever the package ends up including, it’s clear that Ford’s strategy succeeded as it built up momentum for this upcoming FordMustang. Given that this could be the last of the sixth-generation Mustangs, Ford could easily include in the Dark Horse Package plenty of perks and standards for a powerful sendoff.

What Else to Expect from the Next-Generation Mustang

Speculation is ongoing, but automotive experts believe Ford has plans to introduce a hybrid Mustang model by 2025, just in time for the next generation. Muscle car enthusiasts wait on bated breath for any news given that the current-generation Ford Mustang has been around since 2015. Production on the rumored next-gen Mustang isn’t slated to begin until March 2023. A great indicator of where Ford may take the Mustang next is the recently-introduced Mustang Mach-E – the brand’s wildly successful crossover electric SUV that’s inspired by the pony car.

Performance doesn’t suffer when going hybrid, and it fares even better when going full-electric, thus enthusiasts can count on the next-generation Mustang hybrid variant to pick up the pace. The hybrid Mustang is sure to have a smaller gasoline engine than the conventional model, but the electric motors will add additional power when accelerating or tackling an incline. Hybrid vehicles are notorious for producing the same type of driving and handling as conventional gasoline-powered vehicles, all while being powered by an engine with fewer cylinders and a smaller displacement.
