Entering the new year without any signs of slowing down, the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning just won top honors as the North American Truck of the Year. This is the most recent accolade for the electric truck, but it marks the third consecutive year a Ford pickup earns the award. It also marks the fifth time in just three years in which Ford gets a more-than-honorable mention from NACTOY.

“Earning North America’s Truck of the Year is huge for the team that has been working so hard to build and deliver as many Lightnings as possible, as quickly as possible. We’re moving fast to further ramp production to a 150,000 run late this fall and pushing to improve every aspect of this truck. We’ve started delivering Lightnings from the factory with a fantastic new user interface update to improve the driver experience that we’ll also roll out to all of our Lightning owners over-the-air,” said Jim Farley, Ford President and CEO.

Since its initial launch in May of 2022, the F-150 Lightning has been the best-selling electric truck in the U.S., with sales exceeding 15,617 units to help make Ford the No. 2 EV automaker in the U.S. in 2022. To earn the NACTOY Truck of the Year award, vehicles have to be all-new or feature substantially refreshed changes. A jury of 50 professional automotive journalists is tasked with choosing a winner based on criteria which takes into account the following: safety, design, performance, innovation, driver satisfaction, user experience, and overall value. The Ford F-150 Lightning not only keeps the NACTOY Truck of the Year award on its shelf, but it also is lauded as MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year, Edmunds Top Rated, 2023 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy, and much more.

“When America’s best-selling vehicle goes electric you know the transition has momentum. Ford’s effort to create an all-electric F-150 is remarkable because it combines the standard truck’s dimensions, which means it retains massive aftermarket support, with substantial upgrades to areas like storage and mobile power support. It’s really the best of all worlds, giving the F-150 Lightning a wide range of applications for both traditional and new-to-the-segment truck customers,” said Karl Brauer, NACTOY juror and freelance journalist for Forbes.

2023 Ford F-150 Lightning

The popular Ford F-150 Lightning is as attractive as ever. This time around, Ford offers some improvements on the 2023 model, including a boost to its standard range battery, bringing an EPA-estimated range of 240 miles. Additionally, Ford also added its Pro Trailer Hitch Assist technology that automatically controls steering, throttle and brake inputs making maneuvering with a trailer much easier. The technology will be standard with the Tow Technology Package, available on the Pro, XLT, and Lariat trims. Buyers can also choose two new colors–Avalanche Gray and Azure Gray Metallic– among the 10 available options. The new colors replace the outgoing Atlas Blue, Ice Blue Silver and Smoked Quartz Metallic, which are no longer available.
