The Ford Explorer Timberline Adds Off-road Flair

The Ford Explorer and adventure go hand in hand, but it’s the Ford Explorer Timberline trim that takes things ever further when venturing off-road. Buyers who seek a family hauler but have plans to go mountaineering will be happy to learn this little three-row crossover SUV offers plenty of off-road flair. Granted, the trim doesn’t turn the Ford Explorer into a fully capable Ford Bronco, but it does get close. The package looks cool and adds plenty of off-road capability, making it one of the more attractive Ford SUVs on the market.
More than just adding aesthetic touches, the Timberline trim is the only Explorer trim which features functional skid plates and tow hooks. There’s even an upgraded off-road suspension which borrows components from the Police Interceptor Explorer model. Other off-road perks of the Explorer Timberline include all-terrain tires, a limited-slip differential, and Hill Descent Control. The package even gives the Explorer a little bit of a lift–0.8 of an inch to be exact–for up to 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the same as the existing Subaru Outback.
Under the hood, the Explorer Timberline is powered by a 2.3-liter inline-four engine, yielding 300 horsepower and delivering adequate power both on- and off-road. Delivering improved ground clearance and protected by steel skid plates, the 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline trim is a rugged SUV designed to handle even the most challenging of terrains. Additional changes on the Explorer Timberline include improved upholstery options, a heated steering wheel, and other comfort features. On the exterior, the SUV is clad in Timberline badging to help it stand out.
2023 Ford Explorer Highlights
The 2023 Ford Explorer comes in eight trim levels–XL, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, King Ranch and Platinum. Ford’s Explorer Max configuration is available on all trims but the entry-level XL and offers much more cargo space than the standard model as well. Experts deem the Explorer Limited as the best value in the model’s lineup as it includes its fair share of luxury features, such as power-folding running boards, leather upholstery, an upgraded sound system, power tailgate, heated rear seats, and front parking sensors. Additionally, Ford’s Stealth Performance Package adds a more powerful engine, blacked-out exterior trim, and a sport suspension.
