What to Expect from the 2023 Ford Expedition

Ford bestowed a major refresh on the Expedition for the 2022 model year, so it’s unlikely the model will experience many changes going into 2023. That said, industry insiders do expect the Expedition to gain a hybrid engine option for the 2023 model year. For now, the addition of a hybrid powertrain on the Expedition is unknown, but this is what we know so far about the 2023 Ford Expedition.
Since the Expedition is based on the F-150’s chassis, it has the same driving and handling characteristics as a pickup truck. Back in the day, SUVs like the Expedition used to ride on unibody construction instead. Beneath the hood, experts believe the 2023 Expedition will feature the standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 380 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. While the F-150 the Expedition is based on also features a PowerBoost V6 Hybrid engine, nobody is sure if the same option will be available. Competition such as the Toyota Sequoia offers buyers a hybrid V6 engine, so Ford will likely have to make a similar choice to keep the Expedition competitive in its segment. The Expedition Limited trim is powered by a tweaked engine that increases horsepower to 400 and torque to 480 lb-ft. Buyers interested in the Timberline trim can rest assured that their vehicle is powered by a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that generates between 440 to 500 horsepower and more than 500 lb-ft of torque.
All EcoBoost engines beneath the hood of the Ford Expedition are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. All Expedition trims come standard with two-wheel drive, while the Timberline trim focuses on performance and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Buyers looking for all-wheel drive capabilities don’t have to splurge on the Timberline trim as all trims can be optioned with all-wheel drive as an upgrade. Ford offers buyers two body styles when it comes to the Expedition, the standard variant, and the Expedition Max. Although the SUV is already large as is, the Max configuration can easily accommodate eight passengers. Ford has yet to release pricing for the 2023 Expedition.
2022 Changes
For the 2022 model year, Ford added several useful upgrades on its Expedition model, including upgrading interior materials, a standard 12-inch touchscreen display (along with an even larger/optional 15.5-inch screen for premium trims), and a performance package. Ford even added its BlueCruise semi-automated driving system to the Expedition, a feature now available with over 100,000 miles of prequalified highways across North America. Often considered the best in its class, the Expedition competes with the Chevy Tahoe and even larger Suburban in terms of modern features and capability.
The 2022 Ford Expedition comes in six trim levels–XL, XLT, Timberline, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. Ford’s Expedition Max configuration is available on all trims but the entry-level XL and offers much more cargo space than the standard model as well. Experts deem the Expedition Limited as the best value in the model’s lineup as it includes its fair share of luxury features, such as power-folding running boards, leather upholstery, an upgraded sound system, and a power tailgate heated rear seats, and front parking sensors. Ford’s Stealth Performance Package also adds a more powerful engine, blacked-out exterior trim, and a sport suspension.
