As The Blue Oval, along with much of its competition, makes substantial investments in electrification, the future of sporty, V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive coupes with available manual transmissions appears uncertain. Numerous traditional rivals to the Mustang have faced discontinuation, albeit temporarily. However, the iconic pony car perseveres with the recently launched all-new S650 Ford Mustang this past summer (2023). The lifespan of the Mustang in this configuration remains unclear, yet based on Ford’s product and production investments outlined in its new contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW), it appears that enthusiasts have at least a few more years to enjoy the continuation of this model.

As per the outlined UAW contract, the production of the S650 Ford Mustang at the Flat Rock Assembly plant is slated to continue, accompanied by a noteworthy $50 million investment in the facility. This investment holds significance, especially considering that the contractual agreement extends through April 2028. Earlier this month (November 2023), Ford insiders hinted at the possibility of an additional new product joining the Flat Rock assembly line alongside the pony car. However, the nature of this new product remains entirely unclear, leaving speculation about whether it could be another Mustang variant or an entirely different offering.

Nevertheless, Ford has unequivocally expressed its commitment to continue manufacturing V8 engines and integrating them into Mustangs for as long as feasible. It appears that the production of the 5.2L V8 is set to extend at least until the spring of 2028. Beyond that timeline, the fate of the iconic pony car remains uncertain. Initial rumors suggested that it might persist in internal combustion engine (ICE) form until the end of the decade. However, subsequent reports hinted at the possibility of it being succeeded by an all-electric variant.

What’s New on the 2024 Ford Mustang

The Mustang ushers in its seventh generation, featuring a much-needed redesign with significant updates. Amidst various alterations in style and powertrain, the latest iteration offers an array of options catering to enthusiasts with a genuine need for speed. Both Mustang GT and EcoBoost trims now offer buyers an optional Performance Pack equipment upgrade. This Performance Pack includes enhancements such as a front strut-tower brace, Torsen limited-slip differential, wider wheels and tires, larger Brembo brakes, and a MagneRide active-dampening suspension. Performance-minded individuals can opt for additional features like Recaro buckets and an active exhaust. Ford also introduces a Performance Electronic Parking Brake, designed like a traditional lever-action handbrake, aiming to enhance the Mustang’s maneuverability, particularly for drifting.

Adding to the lineup is the all-new Mustang Dark Horse, a track-ready trim boasting a formidable 500-hp Coyote V-8 engine. This variant has a direct connection to the Ford Performance parts bin, incorporating leaner and meaner equipment upgrades. Additionally, a GT California Special appearance package was introduced a few months after the initial launch of the new Mustang. Available for Mustang GT Premium coupe or convertibles, the GT/CS package pays homage to the original 1968 model, featuring distinctive blue accents in the front grille and exclusive wheels.
